Michael Kenna
These are a few images I especially enjoyed from his personal website. The first big thing that stuck out to me about his works, is that they're all in Black and White. It creates this consistency throughout his work that I quite enjoy. His images are so bold and the contrast in these images make them so satisfying to look at. Especially if we look at the first image with the stark blacks and bright whites, its really cool and reminds me of painting with black ink.
After reading a little into his background and history, I found that a lot of these images are long exposures that go up to 10 Hours! It sounds super tedious but the result is beautiful and ethereal.
In this next image and others I included, I noticed how deep and how much depth there is in these images. For something that is a 2d object, it feels like I can reach the farthest point of the image. In this image, my favorite part about it is how the highlights draw you into the farthest point in the scene, where the bright street lights are. The highlights on the tracks and the light grey in those spots are my favorite points in this second image. The middle grey and gradient look to a lot of his refection images are also super gorgeous. In images # 3,4, and 6 they all have this gradient I talk about. The reflection images are super intriguing because the reflection makes its own shape. With the third image I included, I like how the sticks or twigs sticking out of the water transform into something different. The mirrored image effect adds to the feeling a lot of his images give, which is that the locations are mystical and ethereal.
