Lois Greenfield
My Photo Essay inspiration is Lois Greenfield and she creates crisp and clear action images of dancers. Her addition of props and use of costume as well as timing and composition of the dancers is so satisfying. Her images are primarily studio set images and are visually very beautiful.
The studio lighting creates this halo effect that makes the position and pose of the dancer highlighted in a pretty way. I especially enjoy the images of multiple dancers intertwined. I know getting these split moment in the air positions would be difficult and would likely take a multiple tries. A lot of her images are recognizable within the dance community. While I did not choose to shoot my images in a studio setting, and my images are quite different stylistically, the inspiration of perspective, and focal points of movement are directly influenced by Greenfield's work. I also chose to utilize the movement of my subject's clothing, which is also evidenced in her photos.
I want to focus on the general theme and feel of motion and dance. Breathy, dreamy moving images. Lois Greenfield captures this feeling in her images. I especially enjoy this last image and the lighting and backdrop that she has set. The beige simplistic background just halos and centers the dancer in the picture. The shape of the fabric and lines and shadows of muscles and shapes made by the dancer are interesting to look at. Dance and especially ballet is all about creating lines and shapes and she really emphasizes all the unique and eye catching poses that come.
